Position: Lead Behavioral Scientist

This newly created position of Lead Behavioral Scientist will work with internal and external stakeholders to deploy behavioral design throughout the RGA enterprise and to our clients. The role combines research with practical application and client consultancy.

The position is part of the Global Research and Development team, and reports into RGA’s Chief Behavioral Scientist, Matt Battersby. The role is expected to be based in London, but could potentially be located in the USA or Asia, for an exceptional candidate. Some travel will be required regardless of location.

Principle Duties

Design, implement and evaluate behavioral science research and interventions

  • Conducting research to identify drivers of behavior and potential solutions.

  • Designing and executing primary research – this can range from lab-style simulations to live field trials.

  • Analyzing data (either directly or through the utilization of data scientists within the GRDA team) to validate behavioral approaches and inform changes for future research design.

  • Reporting results to colleagues and clients.


  • Proving advice to colleagues and clients on the application of behavioural science.

  • Areas of application could include product development, insurance application and questionnaire design, online sales journeys, and wellness programmes.

Problem identification

  • Working with colleagues and clients to identify behaviors that need to change in order to meet business and broader societal goals. 

  • Analyzing RGA and industry data to identify future challenges.

Thought leadership

  • Develop RGA’s brand through presenting to clients and at various industry & RGA hosted events.

  • Write papers, articles and blogs about the application of behavioural science in insurance, financial services and healthcare.

Team strategy and growth

  • Contribute to the evolving strategic direction of the behavioural science team.

  • Create and lead project-specific teams, utilising GRDA’s researchers and data scientists.

  • Help source, appoint and manage 3rd party suppliers.

  • Help identify future resource needs and recruit additional behavioural scientists to the team.

Experience and Education


  • Master’s degree in Behavioral Science/Economics, or related disciplines (e.g. Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Decision Science, Marketing, Public Policy).

  • 3-5+ years of experience researching or applying behavioural science.


  • 2+ years applying behavioral design in a commercial setting.

  • PhD qualification in a relevant discipline.

Skills and Abilities


  • Deep understanding of key behavioural science concepts and literature.

  • Ability to spot real-life opportunities for applying behavioural science.

  • Ability to adapt theories to a practical setting without losing the core of the idea.

  • Expertise in experiment design and methods, from A/B tests to quasi-experiments.

  • Expertise in statistics and familiarity using quantitative software (e.g. STATA).

  • Ability to work with minimal guidance for extended periods of time, utilizing other resources as appropriate.

  • Excellent communications skills, able to articulate complex issues clearly to individuals, small groups and large audiences in both written and verbal form.

  • Willingness to travel worldwide, as necessary.


  • Experience in innovation ecosystems.

  • Public speaking experience.

  • Knowledge of financial services, technology and/or health industries.
